Make no promises beyond intent

Promising results just might bite you in the butt.

Make no promises beyond intent

Too many of us love a good promise. We want to be certain of outcomes before we invest money, switch jobs, or marry that special someone. The result, after all, often determines whether our decisions were wise.

But if my time in the oil and gas sector has taught me one thing, then it’s taught me how to deal with uncertainty. My time has taught me that I can try to manage and reduce risk, but I can never eliminate risk.

Too many factors can make something go bad in oil and gas. An unreasonable party can dig their heels in and kill a great deal. If something goes to court, good luck predicting how the courts will rule. And finding a new oil and gas play means taking a chance on something unproven and likely risking millions of dollars your company can’t afford to lose.

In each scenario listed above, there are always people who will ask for promises.

Promise you’ll get that deal done.

Promise the courts will rule in our favor.

Promise we’ll find oil and make money.

And, in each scenario, you may be tempted to say those words that’ll comfort them in the moment: I promise.

But the truth is you can’t promise anything regarding the result. You can make promises only as they regard to your effort.

When you promise results, you risk being called a liar and damaging your reputation because of something you have no control over.

But when you make a promise of effort and intent, then you can make sure no one can accuse you of lying.

So be wise about the promises you make.

Goodbye. Adios. Adieu.
