Book Review: The Bootstapper’s Bible by Seth Godin

February 12, 2010

If you didn’t know this already, I really enjoy reading anything by Seth Godin. I think Godin sells a fresh mentality on business. He’s eager to criticize the old tired ways of doing business while identifying what’s current and relevant.

I recently read The Bootstrapper’s Bible: How to Start and Build a Business with a Great Idea and (Almost) No Money.

I started off reading Seth’s newer books focused around new marketing. As the title suggests, this book focuses more on the business side. How to acquire funding, tips on (not) giving away ownership, how to grow and develop — it’s all here.

Included are other people’s stories that give other real-world examples of what Godin preaches. Some of the stories may show you what to do while others may show you what to avoid.

Some of the marketing tactics may seem out of date, but this book was written in the late ’90′s. Just read some of Godin’s more current works for new marketing ideas.

In the end, Godin reminds you that having your own business should be about the rush. And ultimately, you’ve got to strive to maintain that rush. As I said earlier, Godin sells mentality. And if you’re thinking about starting your own business and looking for a way of thinking, this book isn’t a bad place to start.
