My New Year’s Resolution

January 8, 2010

I know, I know — I’ve said that I was done with New Year’s resolutions. In fact, I’m sure that I once made a resolution to stop making resolutions. But like rules, resolutions are made to be broken. So let’s try this again.

This year’s resolution is to establish an online presence. I already have the tools. I have the knowledge and desire. The only thing that has been lacking has been a theme or image. And I think I’ve found it: I want to focus on marketing and business.

Why? I have a marketing degree that’s collecting dust. I enjoy reading about new social media (mostly resources from Seth Godin and David Meerman Scott). I have the networking tools: Facebook, Twitter, Blogger. I often preach the importance of social media marketing and hope to use it professionally someday. So why not start now?

It’s an interesting time for business. The old rules are failing. Now is the time for differentiation and innovation. We’ve got to set ourselves apart from the pack. Resumes are limiting and boring. They don’t leave much room for developing an identity. I believe that an online presence or brand can work wonders for someone in the professional world. Can you think of an easier way for complete strangers to get to know you?

It’s time to practice what I preach. Let the branding begin.

Thanks, Ben. I've thought about that, but first I'd like to get my blog hosted somewhere else or create a template that doesn't feel like Blogger. Got any tips?
